As we wrap up our first week of school, the opening message given by FHUHS Principal, Mr Rasco at Thursday's assembly is worthy of reflection:

Good morning and welcome back!

Welcome back freshmen to your second day; welcome back seniors to your final year. A number of us said it yesterday, perhaps because It cannot be said enough: that it goes by quickly. I am speaking of time - specifically your time. A number of changes were done last year as we shifted to proficiency-based learning but what did not change is our purpose: to provide you with educational experiences that will help prepare you for college, for a career and for life.

Of course we can and we have created a variety of these educational experiences - from math to music; science to sociology - but without you and your engagement there is no experience. Do not be a passive learner; do not simply show up. Get engaged and find your passion. If you pay attention and look and listen and engage you will find life lessons and wonder in every action.

Speaking of time do you remember Kindergarten? I do. I remember a haircut and being upset and not wanting to go and causing a fuss. And I remember the kindness of Miss Pinnard. What about the life lessons there?

“These are the things I learned (in Kindergarten):

  1. Share everything.
  2. Play fair.
  3. Don't hit people.
  4. Put things back where you found them.
  5. CLEAN UP YOUR OWN MESS.
  6. Don't take things that aren't yours.
  7. Say you're SORRY when you HURT somebody.
  8. Wash your hands before you eat.
  9. Flush.
  10. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
  11. Live a balanced life - learn some and drink some and draw some and paint some and sing and dance and play and work everyday some.
  12. Take a nap every afternoon.
  13. When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.
  14. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Stryrofoam cup: The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
  15. Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we.

This is your time.

Find your passion, live with purpose, and be the best you you can be.

Have a wonderful year everyone!
