The Northeast Instrumental Music Festival took place last weekend in Lake George, New York. Twelve of our high school Slaters participated. The students represented the music department, the school district, and the State of Vermont with an incredible amount of respect, responsibility, diligence, and professionalism. They performed exceptionally well at the festival, with several
placing in the top 3 of their sections. Congratulations to our attending musicians, Slater Nation is extremely proud of you!

At Fair Haven Grade School, during kindergarten and first grade Science Exploration Lab, Mrs. Mccrea’s group built bridges to see how much weight a paper bridge could hold. Many of the bridges held over 5 pounds! #studentlearningachievedthroughengagement #slate

This week's Focus Friday highlights STEAM projects happening around the district. CES students designed and made harnesses for bunnies to pull a small package up a ramp. FHGS and Orwell Village School students made book reviews by recording themselves and creating video reports. Benson Village School students created self powered vehicles, and students from Ms. Doran's class at FHUMHS are working on conducting and recording interviews with our video equipment. Great job everyone!

After reading, The Spelling Bee Before Recess by Deborah Lee Rose, CES students in grades K - 2 played Whack-A-Word in Library Class. Mrs. Rampone displayed a word on the board and students had to tap the letters before the "hammer" came down on the timer. It was a fun, interactive way for students to practice their spelling! Today at Fair Haven Grade School, fifth and sixth grade members of Student Voice enjoyed lunch with Superintendent, Brooke Olsen-Farrell and Director of Curriculum, Casey O'Meara. Some great discussion occurred over pizza and salad. Students shared thoughts on what they believe would make their school experience even better.

Harnessing Rabbit Power: Castleton Elementary School Grade 4 students were divided into engineering teams and given the task of constructing a harness for their rabbit to pull a small sack of supplies up a ramp. Students were expected to measure the rabbit, draw blueprints, gather materials and design the harness. After testing out the harness for a comfortable fit, teams put their rabbit through the ramp challenge, and used a stopwatch to time how long it took for the rabbit to get up the ramp with their loaded sacks. All teams were successful!

Meet "Orwell Village School Teacher, Jenna Laslocky" Monday

Our first Focus Friday highlights the various ways our district schools honored Veterans Day. Patriotic songs were song. A slide show paid tribute to veterans both past and present. The area Color Guard marched in as students respectfully placed their hands over their hearts as the colors passed by. Veterans enjoyed lunch with students. Cards of thanks were made. Slate Valley extends its heartfelt gratitude to all of our veterans.
