We had a successful Coffee & Conversation gathering to kick off the year. If you missed it, don't worry! We have three more scheduled, beginning this Wednesday at 7:30 AM at Buxton's Store in Orwell.
For those who prefer evening events, we have our Budget Forums planned to begin late October at 6:30 PM, as well as our monthly Community Advisory Council meetings, (next one is Tuesday, October 8th at 5:45 PM). Additionally, you're always welcome to attend our School Board Meetings, which are open to the public.
We value your input and encourage you to join us at any of these events to discuss budget and all school matters.

Mrs. Crumb's Digital Media class engaged in some engineering challenges. For the challenge, students were given a set of one to two hundred Keva planks and written directions with pictures. Working in teams of two, seventh graders followed the directions to try to recreate the engineering challenge pictured in their directions. Challenges included skyscraper towers, an optical illusion woven box, an impossible tower, and a standing eagle. Seventh graders rose to the challenge and successfully recreated their structures while building the skills of working collaboratively, communicating with a team, and problem solving through design and implementation.

On Friday, September 6th, the Outdoor Pursuits class enjoyed a bike ride to the Poultney River, where they explored the riverbank and began identifying local plants and animals.

The Slate Valley Unified Union Snack Sack Program is thrilled to announce that it has once again been awarded a $10,000 Community Impact Grant from the United Way of Rutland County. This marks the fifth consecutive year that our program has received this generous support, which has been instrumental in addressing food insecurity among Slate Valley students.
Since its inception in 2019, the Snack Sack Program has partnered with the United Way to provide nutritious snacks to students in need. The program's success is largely due to the tireless efforts of Carrieann Wolcott, who has worked closely with Kris Benway to secure funding and ensure the program's continued operation. In addition to her work with the Snack Sack Program, Wolcott has also been instrumental in establishing the Vegi-Van-Go program, which distributes fresh fruits and vegetables to families in Slate Valley, Poultney, and Wells. This initiative has helped to promote healthy eating habits and improve access to nutritious food in our community.

As a precautionary measure, Fair Haven Union Middle and High School, Fair Haven Grade School, and Castleton Elementary School implemented a Secure The Building protocol this morning for approximately 15 minutes. While regular school activities continued, all students and staff were kept inside. This decision was made in response to reported safety concerns in a neighboring school district. At this time there is no longer a concern, and the schools have returned to normal activity.

Tomorrow is picture day at FHUMHS! Bring your smiles!
