Re: Varsity Basketball Playoff Game at North Country High School Greetings Slater Nation, This message is to address any concerns you may have around the fact that North Country High School has been conducting remote learning this week. If you didn’t know, our boy’s varsity basketball team is traveling to North Country High School tonight for a Semi-final basketball game. After receiving a few messages of concern and/or confusion from our community, we inquired with the Vermont Principal’s Association to ensure that we did not have a reason for concern. We have been told that North Country High School went to remote learning this week out of an abundance of caution in regards to community spread but that there has not been a positive case within the school community. Therefore, North Country is eligible to participate and our boy’s team is able to travel there and play tonight. As always, please reach out if you have any questions. Dear Fair Haven Union High School Families, I wanted to update you on the possible return to full-time in person learning for the High School students after April break. This year has no doubt been difficult for our staff, families and most importantly our students. As a district we carefully considered the pros and cons of returning all students to school full-time 5 days a week after April break. The high school solicited feedback from staff, families and students and submitted a report of their findings and recommendations for moving forward. While there is considerable benefit from full-time in-person learning and the plan is to return to a full-time schedule in the fall, the recommendation is to remain status quo for the remainder of this school year. The school board approved this recommendation on March 22, 2021. The information gathered from families, students and staff informing this decision still reflects a wide range of concern over the return to school. While logistically we could make changes in the schedule, and to procedures, we would not have enough staff to offer a remote option for students who might not feel comfortable returning to in-person learning every day. Our focus remains on how we can make the best of the current situation while adding additional student activities as we are able. For example, we are considering an in-person graduation as permitted by the Agency of Education. As always, we ask families of students who are struggling with the current hybrid model to please contact the school directly and we will continue to provide additional support for your child. Dear Slate Valley Families, We have been through a lot this year and over the last four years as a Slate Valley Community. In the past four years we have experienced a threat to school safety and COVID-19. As a result, anxiety has increased for some of our staff, students and community members. The safety, social and emotional wellbeing of students, staff and our community continue to be priorities for Slate Valley as we move towards recovery. As we move forward with recovery from the pandemic, we are also faced with the potential release of a person who threatened staff and students at Fair Haven Union High School. In 2018, the individual who threatened FHU was adjudicated as a youthful offender, a designation for a defendant under the age of 22 and facing charges within the adult criminal justice system. Youthful offender status only follows an individual through their 22nd birthday, which this individual will turn this year. In some cases these individuals are reintegrated into the community or area prior to the regulation of their youthful offender status. When someone is adjudicated as a youthful offender, information about that individual's whereabouts, treatment, or possible consequences cannot be shared. In this case the Department of Corrections and Department of Children/Families have joint oversight of this individual until his 22nd birthday which is in August. I pride myself on being able to accurately communicate when I have knowledge of matters which may impact our community, but in this case I don’t have any additional information. I have repeatedly asked for the information and have been denied access to the information. I have been left to assume there is a likelihood that this individual could return to Vermont in the very near future. If I did have the information, you would have the information as well. Although I know I don’t have specific information on this one individual, I do know that we have been doing great work in terms of school safety and we will continue to be vigilant as a school community. If at any time you have concerns directly related to this individual or any safety concern, please contact local law enforcement. They take these calls very seriously and will promptly look into concerns. I am fully aware of the anxiety that this may cause some of you on top of COVID-19. However, I felt the need to bring it to your attention as I believe you have the right to know as much as possible. Again, the safety, social and emotional wellbeing of students, staff and our community are the priorities for Slate Valley. Tomorrow, Saturday, March 20th, we have two playoff events that will be streaming over on the FHUHS Athletics YouTube channel. In the morning the bowling team will begin their defense of their state championship as they begin their playoffs. That stream is scheduled to begin at approximately 9:30. In the afternoon, we'll be streaming the Varsity Girls basketball game as they take on U-32 and look to remain undefeated with their eyes set on a return trip to the Barre Auditorium. That game is scheduled to tip off at 2:00.
